Animals and Pharaonhs at Caixa Forum

Real or represented, wild or tame animals play an essential role in Ancient Egypt and are omnipresent in their everyday life. This exhibition shows the function and importance of the animal figure in the cultural and religious construction of the Pharaonic civilisation.

The Ancient Egyptians used the different shapes of the animals in symbolic images. In this way, the animal figure became the pillar of Egyptian religious thinking. But it also served as an endless source of inspiration and origin for artistic production of exceptional wealth and variety.

This exhibition, which is curated by Hélène Guichard, Head of Conservation in the Ancient Egypt Department of the Louvre Museum, offers visitors a pedagogic and aesthetic approach for enjoyment and to further knowledge.

Sculptures and trails, glasses and jars, water paintings and murals, caskets and charms, sarcophagus and mummies and the glorification of the animal in statues and sphinxes: over four hundred works that show the importance of animals in the culture of Ancient Egypt.
