Description

Somontano Accessible Wine Experience

Somontano Accessible Wine Experience is a unique and unforgettable wheelchair accessible tour in one of the most beautiful and world-class wine producing areas os Spain.

The Somontano region produces one of the best wines in Spain. Somontano is located in the province of Huesca, more specifically in Barbastro and its surroundings. Their crops are located at the foot of the mountain between the valleys of the Ebro River and the Pyrenees. It was the Romans who consolidated the cultivation of the vine in this area, which were thriving by the influence of monasteries during the Middle Ages.

We will learn first hand how the grapes are cultivated, the wine process, its environment and its philosophy. We will make wine tastings paired with the exceptional gastronomy of its territory. We will have the opportunity to learn how to differentiate the wines through sensory experiences. At the end of this trip, you will come back home with a unique knowledge about this science. This wheelchair accessible private tour will take you to also visit the spectacular enclave of Torreciudad Monastery and the medieval village of Alquezar (cataloged as one of the most beautiful villages in Spain).

Here are the highlights of the Somontano Accessible Wine Experience:

Somontano wineries

The Somontano Accessible Wine Experience includes a wheelchair accessible tour to the facilities and places where wine, cheese and oil is produced. Somontano región produces high quality wines. Due to the quality of these wines, in 1984 the Somontano Denomination of Origin was created. The quality of these wines is supervised by the regulatory council. Almost 30 wineries supply the raw material of more than 500 wine growers in the región.

Alquezar

Alquezar gathers history and legend. The castle that gives its name to this town dates back to the 9th century, when it was built by the Muslims to resist against the Christian kingdoms. Nowadays its urban helmet is Historical-Artistic Set and the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria the Major (formerly a castle), is now National Monument. Its medieval past is still alive in its streets, in its houses, in the Gothic gateway to the square and in its 17th century museum. You can also find samples of rock art in the caves of the Rio Vero Cultural Park.

Sanctuary of Torreciudad

In the province of Huesca, 24 km. of Barbastro, is the sanctuary of Torreciudad. This magnificent sanctuary is located on the left bank of the Cinca river next to the reservoir of El Grado, in a place of great natural beauty. Since the XI century, the old hermitage is the origin of the devotion to Our Lady of the Angels of Torreciudad. The name comes from an old watchtower from the Arab period, whose ruins are located a few meters from the chapel.
