Delhi State Paralympics. Sachin´s medals

We would like to congratulate our 24 year old friend Sachin Chamaria (right side of the picture) for winnig a silver medal in javellin throw and bronze medal in club throw competition in Delhi State level paralympics. It is a great achievement for him. He has qualified for National Games and if he does well we might see him on TV in Asian Games in 2018.

Sachin had a terrible car accident back in 2008. Unfortunately he broke his neck and fracturedd his spine. Sachin is an extraordinary and a very strong person. Living with disabilities can be challenging. People who do not live with disabilities may have a difficult time understanding the plight of those who do. The personal story of Sachin can offer a refreshing perspective on the meaning of life and the triumph of enduring an entirely new way of living

We got to know Sachin in a trip with his lovely family to Spain organised by Accessible Madrid to Madrid. We had a great time together and became good friends. Oscar Olivier, co-founder of Accessible Madrid visited him in India in Autum 2014.

The Chamaria family have pooled resources to conduct a nation-wide clinical research on the effect of umbilical cord stem cells on spine cord injury (SCI) victims. Chamaria family want to put in the "seed" money to push-start a nationwide clinical research. They are being aided by Dr Wise Young, the world-renowned researcher who plans to replicate in India clinical trials on embryo stem cell research held in China and the US. Dr Alok Sharma, the neuro-surgery head at Sion Hospital has agreed to participate in the research.

Paralympic Committee of India is a non-partisan, non-profit organisation. Dedicated for the development and upliftment of Physically Challenged Sports & Wheelchair Athletes." They help to identify potential Paralympians and assist athletes to prepare for competition by providing funds for coaching, equipment and travel in the lead up to the Paralympic Games.

Paralympic Committee of Delhi affiliated State of Paralymic Committee of India(PCI) conduct state meets every year. In such meets Paralympic Committee of Delhi short list the best Athletes. When ever PCI announces its annual National Championships these PCI affiliated State / UT units and Sports/disability wise associations will send entries out of the short listed players selected in their meets through the respective affiliated State Units only. PCI will look into such lists and again short list the best players for competing in the National Championships.

Paralympic Games are major international multi-sport events wherein athletes with physical disability compete( including those athletes with mobility disabilities, amputations, blindness, and Cerebral Palsy). There are Winter and Summer Paralympic Games which are held immediately following their respective Olympic Games. All Paralympic Games are governed by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).

The first Games were called the 1948 International Wheelchair Games, and were intended to coincide with the 1948 Olympics-the first organized athletic event for disabled athletes which took place on the day of the opening of the 1948 Summer Olympics in London, United Kingdom. Dr. Ludwig Guttmann of Stoke Mandeville Hospital hosted a sports competition for British World War II veteran patients with spinal cord injuries. Four years later, competitors from the Netherlands joined the games and an international movement was born. Olympic style games for athletes with a disability were organized for the first time in Rome in 1960, now called Paralympics.

The Paralympic Games have always been held in the same year as the Olympic Games. Since the Seoul 1988 Paralympic Games and the Albertville 1992 Winter Paralympic Games they have also taken place at the same venues as the Olympics. On 19 June 2001, an agreement was signed between the IOC and the IPC securing this practice for the future.
