Pierre Bonnard. Fundacion Mapfre

The Mapfre Foundation presents a selection of works by the French painter, Pierre Bonnard, key artist for the birth of modern art, whose work is difficult to classify. The Recoletos Hall displays around 80 paintings, a dozen drawings and fifty photographs, some of which have never been on display in our country before.

Bonnard founded the symbolist group of the Nabis, whose members were influenced by Paul Gauguin and Japonism. His work is vital to understanding the transition from post-impressionism to symbolism. The French artist?s style stands out for its originality and vividness, considered to be intimist as he often portrayed restful interiors on different formats, such as folding screens, posters or large scale mural paintings.

The works on display come from diverse public and private collections, such as the Orsay Museum, the Georges Pompidou Centre, the Tate Gallery in London or the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
