Edvard Munch. Archetypes

Edvard Munch. Archetypes

The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum hosts the first retrospective in Madrid devoted to the Norwegian painter, Edvard Munch, since 1984. The exhibition, which will review the artist?s career, is made up of eighty works, including oils, drawings and engravings, on loan from the Munch Museet in Oslo and other art galleries around the world.

The exhibition, which is divided into nine sections, brings together an extensive catalogue of emotional archetypes and existential obsessions from contemporary man, such as melancholy, love, jealousy, angst, illness and death. Munch?s work stands out for its thematic circularity, for returning to the same themes at different moments of his career. Throughout the diverse sections, the pictorial techniques used to enter the psychic dimension can be analysed through his canvases.

Archetypes highlights the painter?s contribution to modern art, whereby he is considered to be one of its founding figures along with Cézanne, Gaughin and Van Gogh. The aim is to raise awareness of the Scandinavian artist?s work beyond his best known painting, El Grito (not included in this exhibition), which is made up of a prolific production of 28,000 paintings made throughout his career.
