De la Tour in the Prado.

De la Tour in the Prado.

The Prado is holding an exceptional exhibition on the French painter, Georges de la Tour, consisting of thirty paintings. Forgotten for centuries, La Tour is currently hailed as the most important French painter of the 17th century, along with Poussin.

The exhibition stands out for the number of works on display given that very few are conserved. At the beginning of the 20th century, interest in the painter was revived, whose work, influenced by Caravaggio, is divided into two phases: a first with daytime scenes in which he reflects his native Lorraine, and a second phase in which he focuses mainly on night paintings with violent contrasts of light and his folk, like beggars, street musicians and elderly men in brawls. His delicate religious scenes are another of his recurring scenes.

The Prado usually displays two of his paintings, the only ones in existence in Spain: Blind Hurdy-Gurdy Player (c. 1610-30) and Saint Jerome Reading (c. 1627-29).

Accessibility

The Prado is a barrier free museum for wheelchair and mobility scooter users.
